Close Frame

Close frames have spacers which creates a space between the print and the glazing. Prints are mounted first to a substrate before being fitted into the frame with spacers, which keeps the artwork flat, smooth, and away from the glass. Close frames can be made with a deep or shallow profile.

Overmat Frame

Overmat frames include a 4ply or 8ply mat with a window opening for the print. In most cases, the opening must be at least 1/8" smaller than the artwork, so the mat can overlap all four sides to keep the art from being damaged. Artwork can be hinged or mounted.

Island Frame

Island frames are perfect for prints that do not require glazing, such as dye subs or UV laminated prints. The print is mounted to a substrate, set back slightly below the face of the frame to prevent damage, and then floated in the frame with a space between the work and the frame moulding.

Float Frame

Float Frames include an artwork that is mounted to a substrate with a recessed brace to give the appearance that it is “floating” off the back support of the frame. The artwork is set back slightly below the glazing with space given between the work and the frame moulding.

Float Frame w/ Hinged Art

For this type of float frame, the print is hinged to a museum rag board and fitted into the frame with spacers. All four edges of the art are showing and the hinges (small pieces of Japanese paper with adhesive) are hidden behind the art, giving it the appearance of “floating” on the mat board.
