Ever wondered how a dye-sublimation print is made?

In this video, two of our digital printers walk us through the steps involved in creating a dye-sublimation print on aluminum, producing a 48” x 72” print of an image by David S. Allee.

Dye-sublimation (or dye-sub) is a method of printing in which dyes are directly transferred onto aluminum through the process of sublimation (solid ➡️ gas ➡️ solid). We print the image on a unique transfer paper, which is then joined to an aluminum sheet and pressed at a high temperature. This results in a beautiful fade- and scratch-resistant piece, as the dyes sit below the coated surface of the metal.
